It’s used to treat and prevent lower urinary tract infections (UTIs), such as cystitis. When you take nitrofurantoin, your body quickly filters it out of your blood and into your pee. This is useful if you have a urinary tract infection because it means the medicine is concentrated at the site of infection.
Cautions with other medicines
- indigestion remedies known as antacids, particularly those that contain magnesium.
- cystitis remedies you can buy from a pharmacy.
- antibiotics known as quinolones, including nalidixic acid, ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, norfloxacin, ofloxacin and moxifloxacin.
Side Effects
As with all pharmaceuticals, some unwanted effects can occur from the use of Nitrofurantoin Tablets.
Common side effects include, but may not be limited to:
- nausea
- vomiting
- loss of appetite
- headache
Serious side effects may include:
- signs of lung problems
- signs of liver or gallbladder problems
- signs of blood problems
- severe headaches
- signs of an allergic reaction
